It should ring, with a catch.
One setting changes how it rings. Read it below.
Do Not Disturb or a Focus
Rings
Clock alarms ring in Do Not Disturb and every other Focus.
Silent mode
Rings
Silent mode quiets calls and texts, not Clock alarms.
AirPods or headphones
Rings, with a catch
Apple says it plays on the speaker and your headphones at once. But some people say alarms, especially songs, played only in their earbuds. Pick a built-in tone, and don't rely on earbuds.
Checked against Apple's guides for iOS 26 and iOS 27 on 4 and 5 November 2026.

Try these first
Check the alarm is on, and AM or PM
An alarm set for 7:00 PM stays quiet at 7 in the morning, and a one-time alarm switches off after it rings. Apple says changing the time by hand can affect alarms too.

- Alarms
Turn on Always Play on iPhone
With an Apple Watch on in bed, the sleep alarm can play only on the watch. iOS 26.4 and later can play it on the phone too.

Test again, and check your Apple Watch
Since iOS 26, many people say alarms showed on screen but made no sound. On iOS 27, some fixed it by updating or unpairing an older Apple Watch. Apple hasn't confirmed this, so test an alarm before bed.
If it rang, your phone did its part.
Not sure it made a sound? Pick Didn't ring or Too quiet for the fixes. Waking up is the hard part, and Bed Quitter keeps ringing until you're out of bed and moving.

What each setting does to an alarm from the Clock app. Other Android shows what a Pixel does, and other phones can differ. Alarm apps can differ too, so pick yours in the checker above, then run the 2-minute test.

Alarm too quiet, or no sound at all? Turn it up on each phone
Test it in 2 minutes
Set an alarm for
Pick a time two minutes from now.
- 1Set it in the alarm app you wake up with.
- 2Turn on what you'll have on tonight, like Do Not Disturb or silent.
- 3Lock the phone and put it face down.
Did it ring on time?
It rang with tonight's settings.
A short test can't catch everything, like an overnight restart or a flat battery. Keep the phone charging, and test again after a software update or a new alarm app.
On iPhone, your sleep schedule's alarm has its own volume, and if you wear an Apple Watch to bed it can play only on the watch. This test doesn't cover that alarm.
Then something is holding it back.
Your phone's fixes are next, most likely first.
Will my alarm go off?
An alarm that keeps ringing until you're up.
Bed Quitter is an alarm that keeps ringing until you get out of bed and move. You pick one of seven moves, your phone's camera counts a few reps, and no photo or video from the camera leaves your phone.
You're on the list. We'll email you once, at launch.
Questions people ask
Will my alarm go off on Do Not Disturb?
Yes, from the Clock app. On iPhone, Apple says alarms ring in Do Not Disturb and every Focus. On Samsung and Pixel, Do Not Disturb has its own Alarms switch. It's normally on, so check it once. On Pixel, check Bedtime or any other mode that's on too.
Will my alarm go off on silent?
Yes, from the Clock app. Silent mode quiets calls and notifications, not alarms. On Samsung, make sure one Clock setting is off: Silence alarms when system sound is off. Some phones word it as alarms and timers vibrating only.
Will my alarm go off if I'm on FaceTime?
Not confirmed. Apple doesn't say. Reports from older iOS versions say the alarm still sounds during phone calls, sometimes loudly in your ear, and one old answer says it still goes off during FaceTime. Set a 2-minute alarm during a FaceTime call to find out on yours. On Samsung, an alarm during a call only beeps until you tap Dismiss: Samsung says so for the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Z Fold6, and owners of other Galaxy phones report the same.
Will my alarm go off if my phone is off?
No. A phone that's switched off, or out of battery, can't ring. Charge it overnight and leave it on.
