Android alarm not going off?

Fourteen fixes, most likely first, with a Pixel's menus. Tick each one as you check it, then test your alarm in 2 minutes.

Checked against Google's Pixel and Clock help, and Android's own code, for Android 16 and 17 on 4 and 5 November 2026. Other Android phones can differ, in menus and in how alarms behave, so run the 2-minute test.

Clock and phone settings

Start here. Fixes that open Clock are for Google's Clock app.

  1. Turn up the alarm volume

Alarms have their own slider, apart from the ringer. Google's Clock warns that under 30% may be too quiet.

  2. Check Clock's alarm settings

Gradually increase volume starts the alarm quietly, Silence after stops it after a set time, and Volume buttons decides what pressing one does while it rings. All three are under Alarms.

  3. Disconnect earbuds at night

With earbuds connected, the alarm usually plays in them too. If music was playing, it may be no louder than the music.

  4. Give the alarm a sound

An alarm set to a silent sound only vibrates, and does nothing with vibration off.

Known bugs right now

Bugs that stop or quiet the phone's own alarm, whether they're fixed, and what to do. A lone forum post never makes this list.

  • Alarms make no sound, then say they were silenced

    Not fixed

In late October 2026, Pixel owners reported alarms that made no sound, after which Clock said the alarm had gone off and was automatically silenced. It doesn't happen every time.

    Which versions
Pixel phones, reported in October 2026. No model, Android or Clock version is named.
    Fixed yet?
Google hasn't given a cause or a fix. Its Pixel support team said it had contacted some owners to look into it.
    What to do
Set Silence after to Never in Clock's settings, keep a backup alarm, and test a 2-minute alarm before bed.

  • Alarms don't go off at all

    Not fixed

Some Pixel alarms never go off, and Clock later says the alarm didn't fire for an unknown reason. Reports go back to at least 2021.

    Which versions
Pixel phones. Reports were still coming in September 2026.
    Fixed yet?
Google had said it was fixed, but new reports kept coming.
    What to do
Keep a backup alarm on a second device, and test a 2-minute alarm before bed.

  • Do Not Disturb turned on by voice mutes alarms too

    Fix not confirmed

Asking Google Assistant to turn on Do Not Disturb turned on a version that ignored your exceptions and muted everything, alarms included. Android Authority found the same on its own phones.

    Which versions
Pixel phones, reported in April 2025.
    Fixed yet?
Google didn't comment, and no fix has been reported since.
    What to do
Turn on Do Not Disturb from Quick Settings or Settings, not by voice.

No Pixel update notes since September 2026 mention an alarm fix.

Why Android alarms go quiet

Alarms have their own volume, apart from the ringer, so a phone on silent can still ring and a phone at full ringer volume can still be quiet. Do Not Disturb, Bedtime and every other mode have their own Alarms switch, and if any mode that's on blocks alarms, they stay quiet.

Alarm apps other than Clock also face battery limits. A battery-restricted app's alarms can be held back, and if Alarms & reminders is off, its alarms are cancelled. Makers like Samsung add limits of their own, so run the 2-minute test once you're done.

Questions people ask

Why is my Android alarm not making a sound?

Check the alarm volume first. It's its own slider under Sound & vibration, apart from the ringer, and Google's Clock warns that under 30% may be too quiet. Then check that the alarm's sound isn't silent, and that Do Not Disturb, Bedtime or any other mode that's on lets alarms through.

Will my Android alarm go off on silent or vibrate?

Yes, from the Clock app on a Pixel. Silent and vibrate only quiet calls and notifications, so alarms still ring at the alarm volume. Other phones can differ, so run the 2-minute test.

Why does my alarm app stop working?

Often it's battery limits. A battery-restricted app's alarms can be held back, and force stopping an app, or a cleaner app doing it, deletes its alarms until you open it again. Set the app's battery to Unrestricted and check Alarms & reminders.

Does this work on Motorola, OnePlus or Xiaomi?

Mostly, but the menus differ. These fixes use a Pixel's menus. Android lets alarms through Do Not Disturb unless you change it, and OnePlus says silent and vibrate don't stop alarms. But makers add their own battery limits and move settings around, so run the 2-minute test with tonight's settings.
