When do the clocks change?

The next change for your own time zone, what happens to your alarm that night, and how to move your sleep a little at a time before it.

Next change in the United States

14 March2027

On Sunday, the clocks go forward an hour at 2:00 AM, to 3:00 AM.

2:00 to 2:59 AM is skipped that night.

Then back an hour on Sunday 7 November 2027.

Worked out for the United States. With JavaScript on, this page finds the next change for your own time zone.

Plan the nights before

Bedtime and wake-up move 20 minutes a night, so the first morning on the new time feels like the last on the old.

The last row is the night of the change: its bedtime is by the clock before it changes, and the wake-up by the new one.

Calendar reminders aren't alarms. Set your phone's alarm to each new time as well.

Clock changes in 2027

Every change happens early on a Sunday morning. When clocks go forward, the hour after the change time is skipped; when they go back, the hour before it happens twice.

  • Quebec's government said on 28 October 2026 that it wants 1 November 2026 to be its last change, and will bring a bill. It hasn't chosen summer or standard time, and no bill had been tabled by 5 November 2026, so Sunday 14 March 2027 still stands there for now. Not confirmed beyond that.
  • Quebec east of Natashquan stays on Atlantic Standard Time all year, and so does Southampton Island in Nunavut on Eastern Standard Time.
  • Lord Howe Island, in New South Wales, moves 30 minutes: 2:00 back to 1:30 AM in April, and 2:00 to 2:30 AM in October.
  • Europe changes at one moment: 1:00 AM in the UK, Ireland and Portugal is 2:00 AM in Central Europe and 3:00 AM in Eastern Europe. The Azores change then too, an hour earlier on their clocks.

Places that don’t change

Canada changed the most in 2026: four provinces and territories stopped changing their clocks, so a few phones there may still carry old rules. See what to do if yours shows the wrong time, below.

IndiaIndia Standard Time all year, and has been since 1945.
Most of ArizonaMountain Standard Time all year. The Navajo Nation does change.
Hawaii and the US territoriesHawaii, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa.
British ColumbiaPacific time is now UTC−7 all year: 8 March 2026 was its last change.
AlbertaAlberta Time, UTC−6, all year: clocks didn’t go back on 1 November 2026.
ManitobaUTC−5 all year from 1 November 2026, with northwestern Ontario on the same time.
Northwest TerritoriesUTC−6 all year from 1 November 2026.
YukonUTC−7 all year since 2020.
SaskatchewanCentral Standard Time, UTC−6, all year.
Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern TerritoryTheir own standard time all year.
MoroccoUTC+0 all year since 20 September 2026.

What happens to your alarm

Phones change the time by themselves when they set it automatically, and Samsung says Galaxy phones do even when the time is set by hand. What an alarm does that night depends on when it's set for.

Any usual time, like 6:30 AM

Android: Rings at 6:30 on the new time.

iPhone: Not confirmed

Apple doesn't say.

The skipped hour, like 2:30 AM in spring

Android: Rings at 3:30, an hour later.

From Android's open-source code.

iPhone: Users report it rang at 3:30.

Not confirmed by Apple

The repeated hour, like 1:30 AM in autumn

Android: Rings once, at the second 1:30.

From Android's open-source code.

iPhone: Not confirmed

No Apple page or test we found says.

Google's and Samsung's own Clock apps aren't open source, so what they do in the odd hour isn't confirmed either. If you need to be up during it, set your alarm outside that hour on the night of the change.

Other settings can stop an alarm too: Do Not Disturb, silent mode, a call. Check yours with Will my alarm go off?

If your phone shows the wrong time

A phone changes the time from its own time zone data. When a place changes its rules, a phone that hasn't been updated can change when it shouldn't, or not when it should. It has happened before: in March 2021 some Pixel phones didn't spring forward until they were restarted, and in 2021 some Bell phones in Canada fell back a week early.

iPhoneApple's steps: install any update, turn on Set Automatically in Date & Time settings, restart when it says updated time zone information is available, and turn on Setting Time Zone under Location Services, System Services.
AndroidIn the Clock app's settings, under Change date & time, turn on Automatic date and time and Automatic time zone (Google's help). Install the latest update and restart.
SamsungGalaxy phones change for daylight saving time by themselves, even with the time set by hand, going by the time zone picked.
Still wrongGoogle's advice for Canada's 2026 changes: update and restart first, and if the time is still wrong, set it by hand.
The night ofCheck your alarm before bed, and in the morning check the time against another clock.

How to adjust your sleep

Sleep doctors advise starting a few nights ahead, so the change isn't one big jump. The plan above moves your wake-up alarm with your bedtime, so your sleep stays the same length.

Clocks going forwardGo to bed 15 to 20 minutes earlier each night for a few nights before (AASM). Australia's Sleep Health Foundation says 3 to 4 nights. Eat dinner a little earlier, and get outdoor light early on the first morning.
Clocks going backGo to bed 15 to 20 minutes later each night for a few nights before. If you've been short of sleep, skip that and take the extra hour. Keep the light low until your usual wake-up time.
The night ofSet any clocks that don’t change themselves in the evening, and go to bed at your usual time on the new clock.
The night afterGet plenty of sleep on Sunday night (AASM).

Questions people ask

When do the clocks go forward in 2027?

In the US and most of Canada on Sunday 14 March 2027, at 2:00 AM. In the UK, Ireland and Portugal on Sunday 28 March 2027, at 1:00 AM, and in the rest of the EU at the same moment, which is 2:00 AM in Central Europe and 3:00 AM in Eastern Europe. South of the equator it comes later in the year: Sunday 26 September 2027 in New Zealand, and Sunday 3 October 2027 in south-east Australia.

When do the clocks go back in 2027?

In south-east Australia and New Zealand on Sunday 4 April 2027, at 3:00 AM. In the UK, Ireland and Portugal on Sunday 31 October 2027, at 2:00 AM, and in the rest of the EU at the same moment, which is 3:00 AM in Central Europe and 4:00 AM in Eastern Europe. In the US and most of Canada on Sunday 7 November 2027, at 2:00 AM.

Do the clocks change in India?

No. All of India keeps India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, all year. The time zone database’s last daylight saving entry for India ended in 1945.

Does my phone change the time by itself?

Yes, when it sets the time automatically, which is the usual setting. Samsung says Galaxy phones change for daylight saving time even when the time is set by hand. A phone works from its own time zone data, though, so when a place changes its rules, an old phone can get it wrong until it's updated.

Will my alarm ring at the right time after the clocks change?

An alarm keeps its clock time in Android's open-source Clock app: a 6:30 alarm rings at 6:30 on the new time. Apple doesn't document what iPhone does. In the hour that's skipped or repeated it's less certain, so on the night of the change, set an alarm outside that hour.

Which US states don’t change their clocks?

Hawaii and most of Arizona; the Navajo Nation in Arizona does change. Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa don’t change either, according to NIST.

Is daylight saving time ending?

Not in the US yet. The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act, 308 to 117, on 14 July 2026, but it has been with a Senate committee since 15 July, so it isn't law and the 2027 dates stand. The EU's plan to stop changing has waited on its member states since 2019. In Canada, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories stopped changing in 2026, and Quebec's government says it wants to. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine argues for standard time all year.

Does losing an hour of sleep matter?

Studies have found small, short rises after the clocks change. One US study counted about 6% more fatal crashes on the workdays after the spring change, from 1996 to 2017, and no rise overall after the autumn change. A review of seven studies found a modest rise in heart attacks after the spring change and none after the autumn one, and a study in Finland found more stroke admissions in the first two days after a change, but not across the whole week. These studies are observational, so they show a link rather than a cause.
