Your snooze receipt

Snooze cost

An alarm with no snooze button.

Bed Quitter is an alarm that keeps ringing until you get out of bed and move. You pick one of seven moves, your phone's camera counts a few reps, and no photo or video from the camera leaves your phone.

How the calculator works

It multiplies your snooze length by the number of snoozes each morning, then by your snooze mornings a week, then by 52 weeks. Nine minutes, three times, five mornings a week comes to 117 hours a year, almost five whole days.

That's time in bed between alarms. Some of it is light sleep, some of it is lying there, and none of it is the deep sleep you were after.

The receipt prints the same sum line by line. Give it a number of years and it adds those up too, as far ahead as you choose.

What snoozing does

Each snooze lets you drift back into light, broken sleep, and the next alarm pulls you out again. A 2023 study from Stockholm University found that 30 minutes of snoozing cost habitual snoozers about 6 minutes of sleep and didn't harm their mood or thinking that morning.

So snoozing isn't a health scare. It's a time cost: minutes you could spend asleep, by setting the alarm later, or awake, by getting up at the first one.

How to change your snooze length on iPhone, Samsung and Pixel, and where the 9 minutes came from.

Questions people ask

How long is a snooze?

Usually 5 to 10 minutes. The iPhone has long used 9, Google's Clock app starts at 10 and Samsung's at 5, and most let you change it. In a 2023 Swedish study, snoozers' alarms were about 8 minutes apart on average.

How many people hit snooze?

Most. In a 2023 survey of 1,732 adults, 69% said they snooze or set several alarms at least some of the time. Those who snoozed spent about 22 minutes a morning doing it.

Is hitting snooze bad for you?

Not as bad as its name. In the same study's sleep lab, 30 minutes of snoozing cost about 6 minutes of sleep, and it didn't hurt people's mood or thinking that morning. But the time between alarms is light, broken sleep, so it's mostly time in bed you could have had as real sleep, or as your morning.

Can I share my snooze receipt?

Yes. Save image keeps your receipt as a picture, and where your browser can, Share image sends it straight to another app. The picture is 1080 by 1920 pixels, the tall 9:16 shape Stories use, ready for a Story or a Status, with bedquitter.app printed at the foot. It's drawn in your browser, and your numbers aren't sent anywhere. On a phone set to India's time zone it prints as a cash memo; anyone can switch between India and everywhere else.

How do I stop hitting snooze?

Set the alarm for when you actually need to get up, put the phone where you have to stand to reach it, and keep the same wake-up time every day. An alarm that needs you up and moving, like Bed Quitter, takes the choice away.
