One reminder each morning at its start time. A calendar alert isn't an alarm: Silent mode and Focus or Do Not Disturb can mute it, so set an alarm too.

Before sunrise

Wake up for it, and get up.

Bed Quitter is an alarm that keeps ringing until you get out of bed and move. Set it for the start time above, pick one of seven moves, and your phone's camera counts a few reps. No photo or video from the camera leaves your phone.

What Brahma Muhurta is

Brahma Muhurta is the last part of the night before dawn. A muhurta is a unit of 48 minutes, a thirtieth of a day, and the standard Sanskrit dictionary, Monier-Williams, places brāhma muhūrta between the 4th and the 2nd ghaṭikā before sunrise. A ghaṭikā is 24 minutes, so that is 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise.

Classical texts advise waking then. The Ashtanga Hridaya, an Ayurvedic text, opens its daily routine with it, and the Manusmriti says to wake then and reflect on dharma and artha. The name is often translated as "the creator's time"; a classical commentary reads brahma here as sacred knowledge, so the hour suited to study.

A healthy person should rise in brāhma muhūrta, to protect their life.

Two ways to count it

Most calculators use a fixed 48 minutes, from 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise. Others, Drik Panchang among them, split the actual night, from sunset to the next sunrise, into 15 equal muhurtas and take the 14th. That window is longer than 48 minutes in winter and shorter in summer, so the two agree only around the equinoxes.

Both have a classical basis. Aruṇadatta's commentary on the Ashtanga Hridaya calls brāhma muhūrta the 14th muhurta of the night, notes that it matches two ghaṭikās only when day and night are equal, and so settles on rising when four ghaṭikās, 96 minutes, of the night remain, in every season. This page starts on the fixed count. Switch it above if your family or temple follows the other.

In New Delhi, the two counts compare like this through the year:

New DelhiThe two counts
21 December 2026

96 to 48 minutes: 5:33 am to 6:21 am

Night in 15 parts: 5:20 am to 6:15 am, 55 minutes

20 March 2027

96 to 48 minutes: 4:50 am to 5:38 am

Night in 15 parts: 4:50 am to 5:38 am, 48 minutes

21 June 2027

96 to 48 minutes: 3:48 am to 4:36 am

How the times are worked out

Sunrise comes from NOAA's solar equations, the ones behind its own sunrise calculator, worked out in your browser for the place and the day. It's the moment the Sun's upper edge meets a level horizon, allowing for the air bending its light, as the US Naval Observatory defines it. Times are rounded to the nearest minute.

We checked them against the India Meteorological Department's tables for Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru, and against the US Naval Observatory and timeanddate.com, through the seasons: never more than a minute apart. Hills, buildings and height can still shift the sunrise you see by a few minutes, and some panchangs time sunrise by the Sun's centre, which makes it a little later.

Adding it to your calendar

The calendar file has one event each morning for the next 30 days, each at that morning's start time with an alert, in the count you picked. Sunrise moves by up to about half an hour a month in Delhi, so one repeating event would soon drift away from it.

Android

Google Calendar's app can't add a calendar file. On a computer, open Google Calendar and import it there, and the events then show on your phone.

  2. Import & export
  3. Select file from your computer
  4. Import
iPhoneOpening the file usually offers to add its events to Calendar, but Apple doesn't document this for iPhone, so it's not confirmed. On a Mac, open Calendar and choose File, then Import; an iCloud calendar then shows on your iPhone too.
OutlookChoose Add calendar, then Upload from file. Imported events are a copy and never update, so add a new file after 30 days.
The alertNot confirmed: whether Google Calendar keeps the file's own alert. After importing, open one morning and add a notification if it has none.

A calendar alert is a notification, not an alarm. Apple says Silent mode silences notifications, and Android's Do Not Disturb can block reminders and calendar events, so set a real alarm for the start time as well.

Getting up for it

A real alarmSet your phone's alarm for the start time. Apple says Clock alarms still sound in Silent mode; on Samsung, one Clock setting can silence them. A calendar alert may not sound at all.
BedtimeSleep scientists recommend 7 hours or more for adults up to 60. For the 5:00 am start in New Delhi on 5 November 2026, that's asleep by 10:00 pm. Bedtimes for waking at 5:00 am
Small stepsIf that's far from when you wake now, move your alarm 15 minutes every few days with the wake up earlier planner.
Follow sunriseThe start moves with sunrise, so check it each week, or let the calendar file follow it for you.

Questions people ask

What is the exact time of Brahma Muhurta today?

It depends on where you are, because it's counted back from your own sunrise. In New Delhi on 5 November 2026 it runs from 5:00 am to 5:48 am IST, before a 6:36 am sunrise. Pick your city above for yours.

Does Brahma Muhurta change every day?

Yes. Sunrise moves a little each day, by a minute or so in most of India, and Brahma Muhurta moves with it. It differs by city too: all of India keeps one clock, but in November the Sun rises in Itanagar about an hour and a half before it rises in Bhuj.

Why does it start 96 minutes before sunrise?

A muhurta is 48 minutes, a thirtieth of a day. Brahma Muhurta is the second muhurta before sunrise, so it starts two muhurtas (96 minutes) before and ends one (48 minutes) before. Older sources give the same span as the 4th to the 2nd ghatika before sunrise, a ghatika being 24 minutes.

Why do other sites show a different time?

Usually because they count it another way. Some split the actual night, from sunset to sunrise, into 15 parts and take the 14th, which runs longer than 48 minutes in winter and shorter in summer. Switch the count above to compare. Sunrise can also differ by a few minutes, depending on whether a site times it by the Sun's upper edge, as this page does, or by its centre.

What happens at 3:30 to 3:40 am?

Nothing fixed by the clock. Some teachers give a clock range, such as 3:30 to 5:30 am, but the traditional rule counts back from sunrise, so the start moves through the year. In New Delhi it starts as early as 3:47 am in June and as late as 5:39 am in January.

Can I sleep after Brahma Muhurta?

The texts that recommend it describe getting up then and starting the day, not going back to sleep. What matters more is enough sleep: sleep scientists recommend 7 hours or more a night for adults aged 18 to 60. In New Delhi on 5 November 2026, Brahma Muhurta starts at 5:00 am, so that means being asleep by about 10:00 pm.

Who should not wake up in Brahma Muhurta?

The Ashtanga Hridaya gives its advice to a healthy person. Two classical commentaries on it, Aruṇadatta's and Hemādri's, say the rule doesn't bind someone who is ill, and one says they should sleep instead.

Does Brahma Muhurta really work?

No good study shows that it changes your health, and this page makes no such promise. The one controlled trial we found that names it was small: 54 young men at one school in 2012, run by a yoga university, and it hasn't been repeated. Popular claims about extra oxygen before dawn, or the pineal gland peaking then, aren't backed by research: the oxygen in air varies only by millionths, and melatonin usually peaks between 2 and 4 am.
